To the one becoming —
Let me be honest with you right off the top: nobody prepared me for what it actually feels like to become a therapist. I sat in my own training sessions nodding along like I understood things I absolutely did not understand, stress-eating in my car between sessions, and going home at night wondering if I had accidentally chosen the hardest thing a human being can do.
Spoiler: I had. And also — it was the most sacred, most right thing I have ever done with my life.
Here's what I kept seeing after I became licensed, started supervising, started teaching at USF — y'all are burning out before you even finish training. Not because you're not built for this. Because nobody is giving you the real stuff. The stuff about who you are in the room. What to do when a client's pain lands in your body and doesn't leave. How to hold your own becoming while you're holding someone else's.
"We train therapists to be competent.
But nobody teaches you how to stay whole."
I've watched brilliant, big-hearted people lose themselves trying to perform "professional." I've watched imposter syndrome convince genuinely gifted clinicians that they don't belong in the chair. I've watched the field take the soul right out of people who came in with so much of it.
That ends here. With us.
I built Dear Becoming Therapists because I am passionate — like, cannot-stop-talking-about-it, my-husband-has-heard-this-speech-many-times passionate — about this work being done well. Not just technically well. Soulfully well. Because the relationship is the intervention. Because your presence is the most powerful clinical tool you will ever have. And because you deserve someone in your corner who will tell you the truth, make you laugh, and remind you that this sacred, hard, beautiful thing you're stepping into? You were made for it.
This community is the thing I wish had existed when I was becoming. So I built it. And I built it for you.
Come as you are. Bring your questions, your doubt, your brilliance, and yes — your burnout. We've got room for all of it.
With my whole heart (and a lot of opinions),
